Monitoring network bridge devices

Network bridge device is a computer networking device that creates a single aggregated network out of several communication networks or network devices. Bridges only forward packets that should cross the bridge (are not sent to any of bridged device). Simplifying, when bridge receives a packet, all its bridged devices receive it. That excludes unnecessary packets forwarding across devices participating in a bridge.

Network bridges are often used when setting up virtual machines environment. That allows using the host’s network interface without reconfiguring it: the bridge joins “virtual” (internal use) network interface, used to connect VMs, with physical host network interface, thus making network administration much simpler.

Network bridges (used as repeaters) allow to join several physically or logically isolated networks into a single network. Various devices can serve as a network bridge (DSL modems, standard network switches etc). From inside, joined networks are working as one single intranet; all devices within it can be accessed directly, no need to set up specific routing.

Network bridges eliminate gaps between separate networks.

  • prevent connectivity disruption; that includes VLANs, virtual machines internal networks etc.
  • measure traffic speed across bridges, to prevent possible bottlenecks and traffic throttling

    The MIB module used to describe the ArrowPoint Communications logging functionality.

    This MIB module defines a set of managed objects that instrument devices that conform to the IEEE 802.1 standards for MAC-layer bridges.
  • CISCO-RSRB-MIB
    MIB module for objects used to manage Remote Source Route Bridging (RSRB). The goal of this MIB to to allow a management stations to display the attributes of the local-remote RSRB peer relationship.
  • CISCO-VLAN-BRIDGING-MIB
    A set of managed objects for optimizing access to bridging related data from RFC 1493. This MIB is modeled after portions of RFC 1493, adding VLAN ID based indexing and bitmapped encoding of frequently accessed data.
  • LANOPTICS-BRIDGE-OPTION-MIB
    MIB II Extension Definitions for Bridge Manager Option.
  • P-BRIDGE-MIB
    The Bridge MIB Extension module for managing Priority and Multicast Filtering, defined by IEEE 802.1D-1998.
  • PPP-BRIDGE-NCP-MIB
    This is the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) Bridge NCP Management Information Base module.
  • Q-BRIDGE-MIB
    The VLAN Bridge MIB module for managing Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks, as defined by IEEE 802.1Q-1998.
