IP protocol specifies a set of eight options that provide special routing controls, diagnostic tools, and security. These eight options can be used for malicious objectives. Either intentionally or accidentally, attackers sometimes misconfigure IP options, producing either incomplete or malformed fields. The misformatting is anomalous and potentially harmful to the intended recipient. When the Bad IP Option Protection SCREEN option is enabled, the security device detects and blocks packets when any IP option in the IP packet header is incorrectly formatted. This attributes records the detection of the IP bad option packets.
