Proxy server

Proxy server serves as intermediary when passing traffic from one network node to another. Depending on the task to solve, proxy servers can be of different type, provide different functionality. For example, proxy can pass all the traffic as is, without adding any technical etc. information, i.e., to serve as tunneling proxy. Proxy server can hide as much information able to disclose the traffic originator as possible, i.e. to be an anonymizing proxy. Proxy can be classified by the protocol they use (HTTP/HTTPS, SOCKS) and so on.

Primary use of proxy is to provide access to network nodes, using proxy advantages: i.e., if it is required to hide the source of traffic, make connection untraceable (anonymous); connect to servers otherwise inaccessible and so on. A caution should be taken when setting up proxy: misconfiguration and/or out-of-date versions can lead to numerous security risks, including making it open for anyone.
