Templates: Mail Servers – Microsoft Exchange 2007 Mail server

Monitors included into Mail Servers – MS Exchange 2007 Mail Server template

Monitors from this application template check e-mail services availability and performance data for a Microsoft Exchange 2007 Mail Server (IMAP/IMAPS, POP3/POP3S, SMTP). One of the monitors can send an optional test message via the monitored server. MS Exchange is a popular Microsoft messaging system that includes a mail server, an e-mail program (e-mail client), and groupware applications. More about templates.

Monitors list

Monitors description

IMAP port (enabled by default) Shows if IMAP service answers on specified port. Default is 143.

POP3 port (enabled by default) Shows if POP3 service answers on specified port. Default is 110.

SMTP port (enabled by default) Shows if SMTP service answers on specified port. Default is 25.

MS Exchange 2007 version check Checks if this template is suitable for the host. Disabled by default. This is a match monitor and used only in network discovery. You don’t need to enable it, since is does not check any valuable characteristic.

AD Topology Service Shows if AD Topology service (provides AD topology information to Exchange services) is alive. The service provides Active Directory topology information to Exchange services. If this service is stopped, most Exchange services are unable to start. This service has no dependencies.

IMAP, TLS Shows if IMAP service accepts secure connections, forced TLS.

IMAP, TLS if available Shows if IMAP service accepts connections, TLS or non-secure.

IMAP, non-secure connection Shows if IMAP service accepts non-secure connections on specified port.

IMAP4 Service Shows if IMAP4 service is alive. The service provides IMAP4 service to clients. If this service is stopped, clients won’t be able to connect to this computer using the IMAP4 protocol. This service is dependent upon the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service.

IMAPS Shows if IMAP service accepts SSL-encrypted connections on specified port.

IMAPS port Shows if IMAP service answers on specified port. Default is 993.

Information Store Service Shows if Information Store service is alive. the service manages the Exchange Information Store. This includes mailbox databases and public folder databases. If this service is stopped, mailbox databases and public folder databases on this computer are unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. This service is dependent on the RPC, Server, Windows Event Log, and Workstation services.

Mail Submission Service Shows if Mail Submission service is alive. The service submits messages from the Mailbox server to Exchange Hub Transport servers. This service is dependent upon the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service.

Messages Queued for Submission Messages queued for submission performance counter indicates the number of messages in the mailbox store that are ready to be sent and are waiting to be submitted to a transport server.

POP3 Service Shows if POP3 service is alive. The service provides POP3 service to clients. If this service is stopped, clients can’t connect to this computer using the POP3 protocol. This service is dependent upon the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service.

POP3, TLS Shows if POP3 service accepts secure connections, forced TLS.

POP3, TLS if available Shows if POP3 service accepts connections, TLS or non-secure.

POP3, non-secure connection Shows if POP3 service accepts non-secure connections on specified port.

POP3S Shows if POP3 service accepts SSL-encrypted connections on specified port.

POP3S port Shows if POP3 service answers on specified port. Default is 995.

Replication Receive Queue Size Replication receive queue size performance counter indicates the number of replication messages in the public store that have been delivered to the store but are waiting in the receive queue to be processed.

Replication Service Shows if Replication service is alive. The service provides replication functionality for mailbox databases on Mailbox servers in a database availability group (DAG) and database mount functionality for all Mailbox servers. This service is dependent upon the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service.

SMTP, TLS Shows if SMTP service accepts secure connections, forced TLS.

SMTP, TLS if available Shows if SMTP service accepts connections, TLS or non-secure.

SMTP, TLS if available, test message Shows if SMTP service accepts connections, TLS or non-secure. Sends a test message.

SMTP, non-secure connection Shows if SMTP service accepts non-secure connections on specified port.

Server Too Busy / sec Client: RPCs Failed: Server Too Busy / sec count.

System Attendant Service Shows if System Attendant service is alive. The service forwards directory lookups to a global catalog server for legacy Outlook clients, generates e-mail addresses and OABs, updates free/busy information for legacy clients, and maintains permissions and group memberships for the server. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. This service is dependent on the RPC, Server, Windows Event Log, and Workstation services.

Service Host Shows if Service Host service is alive. The service provides a host for several Exchange services. On internal server roles, this service is dependent upon the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service. On Edge Transport servers, this service is dependent upon the Microsoft Exchange ADAM service.

Templates overview

IPHost Network Monitor provides application templates (or just “templates” later in document), to create multiple relevant monitors in only a few clicks. Templates facilitate adding typical monitors sets; this can be particularly useful in case of big networks, when creating same-type monitors for many same-type devices is a common task. Application templates are sets of monitors that can be added, using specific predefined parameters, for a given host at once. The said set, added for given host, is displayed as a separate node in tree view pane, and is named application.

There are predefined templates; user can as well generate templates of their own – either out of existing monitors, or by cloning a predefined template. User-added template definitions are saved in XML files and can thus be conveniently augmented or applied to specific needs.
