Group Properties
Host Properties
Hosts have several property sections. Some host properties provide default values for corresponding monitor properties.
- A Host section - contains general information about the host. The Worst State of Monitors of the Host property of the host's monitors is always up to date. Host Group can be changed using a drop-down list. The Host Display Name is a human-readable name that shows up in all reports. The property Poll Using specifies whether an IP address or a DNS name should be used for connecting to the host; both the DNS name and IP Address are defined here too. When the host is polled using an IP address, its DNS name is resolved and shown in the client application and when it is polled using a DNS name, its IP address is resolved and shown. Two fields provide reporting facilities: a Link to Summary Report (read only; double click opens the report in the browser) and the Notes (to be shown in reports) field that initially contains the host creation date (editable text). The last property of this section, Device Web Interface URL, specifies the HTTP URL to open in browser when Device Web Interface is selected from the Admin Tools menu on the property editor toolbar.
-
A Host Maintenance section - contains a Maintenance Period property you can use to indicate temporary host inavailability due to periodic or one-time maintenance.
-
Alerting - is the default set of alerts for the host that may be inherited by any monitor on this host (may be absent).
-
States Summary - is the current set of states of all monitors of a selected host; each row contains an icon, a state name, and the number of monitors in this state.
Monitor Type Properties
Most of monitor type properties provide default values for corresponding monitor properties. The network discovery process uses these default settings when it creates new monitors during discovery. You can adjust them before performing the discovery (say, enter specific credentials for your mail servers). The default settings are also used when monitors are created manually.
Monitor type property sections are listed below.
-
A Monitor Type section contains the worst state of a child monitor of a given type, a Link to Summary Report (read only; a double click opens a report in the browser) and Notes displayed in reports for this monitor type (editable text).
-
Default Monitor Data - is the collection of monitor-specific settings used to create new monitors of a given type. Settings names differ for different monitors; they are described here.
-
Alerting - is the default set of alerts for the monitor type that may be inherited by any monitor of this type (may be absent).
-
Default Availability Monitoring Settings - is the settings for Down and Extended Down states that may be inherited by any monitor of this type.
-
Default Performance Monitoring Settings - is the settings for Performance Warning and Performance Problem states that may be inherited by any monitor of this type.
-
States Summary - is the current set of states of all monitors of a given type; each row contains an icon, a state name, and the number of monitors in this state.
Host Group Properties
Host groups (Servers, Network Equipment, Desktops and Notebooks, Printers and UPS, Miscellaneous) have standard property sections: Host Group (containing the worst monitor status and reporting parameters), and States Summary.
One can create custom host groups (e.g. Mail servers, Data Canter) to logically group hosts being monitored. For example, in case you provide external monitoring services, you can create a group per every customer to facilitate the task.
Monitor Category Properties
Monitor categories have standard property sections: Monitor Category (containing the worst monitor status and reporting parameters), and States Summary.
State Properties
Monitor states have standard property sections: State (containing reporting parameters), and States Summary.
Properties of Root Tree Items
The root items in each view have standard property sections: View (containing the worst monitor status and link to the summary report), and States Summary. Selecting a root item of a tree in the Tree View pane and taking a look at its States Summary proves convenient when you need to check the overall system status.
